BitnerWhen planning a race, organizers often focus on the course, the participants, the permits, etc… and way at the bottom of the list is "medical." However, what does type of planning does that really entail? This course will provide the participant with the tools necessary to build a scalable medical plan that protects the riders, the staff and the providers. From the basics of performing a medical threat assessment to developing your emergency response objectives and assembling your team, the lecture will help participants ensure a safe event.

Dr. Bitner, MD, MEd, FACEP, is the Chief of Emergency Maria Parham Medical Center - Duke LifePoint Hospitals, and is the Director of Education and Training for STAT Medical Solutions.  He has worked many international-caliber events and helps to plan and organize the medical staff at the US' largest races.

Monique Ryan, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN, is the owner of Personal Nutrition Designs, LLC based in the Chicago area. She has over 25 years of sports nutrition experience working with competitive endurance athletes. She was the sports dietitian for Team Type 1 and has consulted with several cycling teams including the Saturn Cycling Team and the Volvo-Cannondale Mountain Bike Team. Monique was a member of the Performance Enhancement Teams for USA Triathlon and USA Cycling (Women's Road Team) leading up to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Monique is the author of "Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes, and was a regular contributor to VeloNews-The Journal of Competitive Cycling from 1991 to 2010. She is a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics.

The Fourth Annual Medicine of Cycling Conference will be held at USA Cycling and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO September 20 – 22nd, 2013. The conference is presented by the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and Medicine of Cycling in collaboration with USA Cycling.

Early bird registration ends on August 15th and saves up to $56 off the cost of attending the 2013 Medicine of Cycling Conference. Be sure to register for the hands-on workshop "Medical Emergencies in Cycling", the group bicycle ride and the dinner at the legendary Marigold Cafe.

The UCSF CME Governing Board Accreditation Review Committee reviewed and approved the credit request for the 2013 Medicine of Cycling Conference scheduled to begin 9/20/2013 and end on 9/22/2013.

The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF designates this activity for a maximum of 18.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM.

Call For Abstracts for Medicine of Cycling Conference 2013

Medicine of Cycling is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts for this year's medical conference to be held September 20-22, 2013 in Colorado Springs, CO.  Medicine of Cycling and UCSF invite you to submit your original research papers now through February 28, 2013.

We encourage abstract proposals in wound care, physical therapy/rehabilitation and recovery, general health and cycling and cycling with disabilities.  However, our program is not limited to these topics. We welcome all topics that address medical issues seen in cycling.

Abstract proposals are sought for both oral and poster presentations.  Abstracts should generally be no longer than 300 words and must cite quantitative data from representative studies.

Oral abstract presentations will involve a 10-minute presentation followed by a 5-minute Q&A.

Poster abstracts will be displayed at the conference.  The poster should be clear and organized for viewing measuring no larger than 4’ x 4’.  The presenting author of the poster will be assigned a time slot during which he/she is expected to be physically present at the poster to answer any questions.

Abstracts must address the following:

  • Objective
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Significance to Cycling Medicine

Submitters will be notified by e-mail of their submission status in May 2013.

Proposals are sought for all interactive sessions.  We hope to include some new topics this year, and proposals are encouraged in wound care, physical therapy/rehabilitation and recovery, general health and cycling and cycling with disabilities.  Please note that our program is not limited to these topics. We welcome all proposals that address medical issues seen in cycling.

Proposals will be accepted in one of the following formats: lectures or workshops. To be considered, proposals must contain the following items:

  • A complete outline of the presentation
  • Five learning objectives for the presentation
  • A speaker resume/CV
  • A list of references from past conferences where the speaker has presented
